Why is my virtual card being declined?

Written by Eva

If your Eversend virtual card is being declined, it's usually due to one of a few common reasons, such as insufficient funds, a deactivated card, or an issue with the merchant attempting the payment. The sections below explain the most common causes and how to resolve them.

1. Insufficient funds

Your virtual card must have enough available balance to cover:

  • The purchase amount.

  • Any applicable transaction or foreign exchange (FX) fees.

If your card doesn't have enough funds, the payment will be declined. Repeated payment attempts with insufficient funds attract a penalty and may result in your virtual card being permanently deactivated. If this happens, you'll need to create a new virtual card before making any further payments.

What to do:

  • Fund your virtual card with enough money before retrying the payment.

  • Ensure the balance covers both the payment amount and any applicable fees.

2. Your virtual card has been blocked

If your virtual card was blocked for any valid reason, you will experience declined payments until the card is reactivated.

What to do:

Reach out to support for immediate assistance.

3. A merchant is attempting to charge your card

If you've previously used your virtual card for a subscription or recurring payment, the merchant may continue attempting to charge the card even after it has been deleted or blocked.

This behavior is controlled by the merchant and the international card networks and cannot be stopped by Eversend.

If the merchant continues to submit payment requests to a deleted card, those transactions will be declined.

What to do:

  • Log in to the merchant's website or app.

  • Update your payment method with your new virtual card if you wish to continue using the service.

  • If you no longer want the service, cancel the subscription directly with the merchant and remove your saved card details.

4. The merchant has declined your card

In some cases, the merchant may decline your card for reasons unrelated to your Eversend account. This may happen due to the merchant's own payment policies, risk checks, or regional restrictions. If your card works with other merchants but is declined by one specific merchant, the issue is likely on the merchant's side.

What should I do if my card is still being declined?

If your payment continues to fail:

  • Confirm that your virtual card has enough available balance.

  • Check that your card is still active.

  • If your previous card was deleted, create a new virtual card.

  • If you're paying for a subscription, update your payment details with the merchant.

If you've completed these checks and your card is still being declined, contact Eversend Customer Support through More > Help in the app or email [email protected]. When contacting us, include the name of the merchant, the payment amount, and a screenshot of any error message, if available. This will help us investigate the issue more quickly.
